Wondering how to navigate the chaos of an outdated, disorganized Docs-as-Code repository and bring order to the documentation shipwreck? Stephanie Fuller's talk will explore how to prioritize fixes, maintain new documentation, and implement sustainable processes - no matter how small your team is.

Stephanie will also be a part of our first Docs in Discussion: Speaker Series virtual panel on March 18 at 12pm PST.

What about tech writers, Mr. Stephenson? "All technical devices require documentation […], but this stuff can only be written by the techies who are doing the actual product development, and they absolutely hate it, always put the dox question off to the very last minute. Then they type up some material […], run it off on the laser printer, send the departmental secretary out for a cheap binder, and that's that." Snow Crash, ch. 48

I'm migrating our devportal in Redocly Realm (highly recommended). Ran the preview server & something didn't look right. The prompt was just "Press (q) to quit". Started to worry then realized it's missing total error counts & "or (e) for full error log". The migration has been smooth, but it's taken a while because I'm doing all the refactoring, coding, writing, and styling. I've never seen a run with no errors before.

Yay!

Nearly 50 people crammed into the room for our #BrickDocs workshop in Melbourne last week, looking forward to learning with Lego. Technical writers, engineers and managers had their first experience of this fun, practical exercise that helps people who are not profession writers learn how to write better instructions.

Now that we have a group of people equipped to have a go at running their own BrickDocs workshop, we are looking forward to learning from their experiences. We have already learned a lot from the responses to the workshop and the 1 hour reflective discussion that took place immediately after the workshop.

#writethedocs Theresa Neate from Build Kite gave a great talk - 'Don't Make Me Think - the UX of developer experience'. Developer Experience (DX). She shared some interesting metrics to use to measure effectiveness of developer docs:
~ Speed from zeo to 'hello world'
~ Responsive support - how easy it is to contact support and receive a helpful response from them.
~ Instant sign-up: make it low-friction. Perhaps deliver something useful to the developer during the sign-up process? Single Sign On (SSO) is key here.

We have been busy this year developing the idea of a Brick Docs Workshop designed to help IT engineers develop technical writing skills. This fun workshop uses Lego to identify writing and formatting techniques that help make instructions clearer.

We are running this workshop at the national technical writing conference in Melbourne next week. DM me if you want to attend - I can see if I can wangle some tickets.
