UK’s secret iCloud backdoor order triggers civil rights challenge.

The UK government’s secret order to Apple demanding it backdoor the end-to-end encrypted version of its iCloud storage service is challenged by two civil rights groups, Liberty and Privacy International.

They called the order “unacceptable and disproportionate” and warned of “global consequences” as it's thought to extend to non-UK users too.

@sebsauvage @titaniumbiscuit not all classic e-mail providers work equally well but many do. Since #chatmail entered the global e-mail server network 14 months ago, and we introduced instant-onboarding april 2024, we de-emphasize #gmail #outlook and #iCloud and don't perform "free" work to help them continue to dominate. Instead we put our energy into growing the chatmail server network which does away with spam/rate-limit problems by design. Everything is based on #interoperable #cryptography .

End-to-end #encryption battle continues.

#Apple appeals a United Kingdom government order to create a back door in the #iCloud storage service. As we learned last month, those pesky Brits are demanding Apple break its end-to-end encryption, also known as Advanced Data Protection (#ADP).

(We only know this because secret sources spoke to Tim Bradshaw and Lucy Fisher. Said secret sources revealed the secret complaint to the UK’s Investigatory Powers Tribunal, appealing the secret order—in secret.)

As always with attempts to break #E2EE, the math ain’t mathing. In #SBBlogwatch, we worry about dumb pols: securityboulevard.com/2025/03/

Apple is challenging UK’s iCloud encryption backdoor order.

Apple is challenging a UK Government data access order in the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT). The order targeted iCloud backups that are protected by end-to-end encryption.

UK officials are exercising powers they hold via national security surveillance legislation to try to force the iPhone maker to provide data in the clear to law enforcement.

As of Feb 21, Apple users located in the UK can no longer activate Advanced Data Protection (end-to-end encryption) for their iCloud Drive, iCloud Backup, Photos, Notes, and more.

For people in the UK, this is of course bad news and a very disappointing development. If this regional ADP block is maintained, it is a huge drawback for any Apple user's privacy rights, and a loss of data security as well.

For people outside the UK, this is a loud warning alarm. The UK government isn't the only one that has repeatedly tried to undermine encryption and privacy rights. While this might sound obvious for some authoritarian regimes, it's sadly also true for other governments considered open and democratic.
