Are there any booktubers on #peertube? People reviewing books, sharing what they're reading right now, etc.
I don't dislike Phoenix, though. It makes sense so far.
So I spent most of this week at work learning Elixir and I must say I was not impressed. The syntax is very unintuitive (I measure that by trying something I believe should work and then comparing it to the actual way the language does it), and the documentation (at least the Getting Started guide) seems pretty disorganised and filled with examples that include features you haven't yet seen.
I may be wrong, but it feels that the creator of the language came from a Ruby background.
On today's episode of “Things that Are Wrong with the Internet,” people who respond to others with gifs when an argument is expected and still consider themselves witty.
The post I just RT has made me see the light about ActivityPub and the Fediverse in general (i.e., I already knew it was a good idea. I just didn't realise how great and game-changing it could be).
Where's the Tolkien fans at?
Noticed my 1973 copy of The Hobbit has a message on the inside cover.
Can anyone translate?
This is very important:

"Article 13 of the Copyright Directive will force internet platforms (social networks, video sites, image hosts, etc.) to install upload filters to monitor all user uploads for copyrighted content, including in images – and thus block most memes, which are usually based on copyrighted images.
(...)
It will come down to every single vote. (...) The NGO EDRi has made a list of key swing votes: https://edri.org/files/Copyright_JURI_MEPs_undecided.pdf."
This will affect #Fediverse.
The EU is about to update #Article13 to force sites to use YouTube-style content filters on all uploads.
This is a terrible idea:

Some MEPS are already fighting back:

but they need as many allies as possible:
Please email/call your MEP as soon as you can (as in today!), tell them that these changes are dangerous to European freedom, business and culture.

Why do so many people in the Fediverse actively refuse to give context on the things they comment on? “About that article on X...” “Regarding the famous hashtag...”
From now on, I'm going to mute whoever does that assuming they want to make their own opinions heard, but avoid discussion on them.
And if you're thinking: “I just don't want to give X publicity.” Guess what: You're already doing it, asshole.
Years ago I was working on an #Emacs based IRC client called ERC with Mario Lang. After a while I realized he was blind. He told us how angry bicycles make him when people leave them on the sidewalk. I was confused but for him, walking along the sidewalk at a brisk pace, they were traps. His super light stick would get caught in their spokes and break off! Then he was suddenly blind for real! Anyway, #smallstories.
Enough about the #GDPR. Let’s talk about the next challenge, #copyright.

Julia Reda has an update: «Update from May 25th 2018, 13:37: Member State governments have today adopted their position on the copyright reform, with no significant changes to the upload filters and link tax provisions. It is now up to Parliament to stop them.»
